Cincinnati’s golden age in the mid to late 19th century represented an era of significant growth and prosperity in the region. Trade and manufacturing coupled with the shipping route along the Ohio river brought tens of thousands of people to the Cincinnati area. Among them was the next generation of American painters. The Art Academy of Cincinnati (Founded in 1869 as the School of Design) employed teachers such as William Merit Chase, Frank Duveneck and Lewis Henry Meakin who in turn taught and inspired the next generation of regional artists who traveled extensively and studied the masterworks of European Art – including the influence of early French impressionism. As the city continued to prosper – these artists found support in the commission acquisition of their artworks by prominent families. Many of these artworks are survived by generations of collectors and family estates who carry on the legacy keeping the work “Forever Gold”.
