“Constructive Cloth” Featuring the textile artworks of Sherri Lyn Wood and Denise Burge

(Cincinnati, Ohio) – Eisele Gallery presents a two-person exhibition featuring textile artists Sherri Lyn Wood and Denise Burge. Each artist shows a masterful representation of the media while exploring very different themes in their work. Pictorial narratives by Burge and geometric abstractions by Wood stand apart as individual expressions in the media yet both are a homage to the traditions of quilting and textile art. This exhibition is curated by Sandy Eichert, this is the 3rd show Eichert has curated at the gallery.

The exhibition will be on view at the Eisele Gallery starting November 4th and will be on view through November 26th, 2022. A reception for the artists will be held at the Eisele Gallery on Friday, November 4th from 6 – 9 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

About Denise Burge

Denise Burge works in a variety of media, including drawing, film, installation, painting, and quilt-making. Her quilt work has been widely commissioned and collected; and was included in two Quilt National exhibitions. She has been awarded multiple Ohio Arts Council grants, a nationally competitive Joan Mitchell Foundation award as well as a Summerfair Award for Emerging Artists. She has also been awarded competitive residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts, the Fine Art Work Center in Provincetown, and the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. From 2006 to the present, she has been creating video installations with Lisa Siders and Jenny Ustick under the name Maidens of the Cosmic Body Running. In addition, she carries out a separate collaboration with Abby Cornelius which includes video and sculptural installation work. She maintains an ongoing schedule of group and solo exhibitions of her quilt and painting work as well. Denise Burge has taught in the Department of Fine Arts at UC since 1992, and is a Full Professor of Art.

About Sherri Lyn Wood

Currently based in Cincinnati, OH, Wood is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant and numerous artist residencies, including Recology San Francisco, where she undertook the task of presenting a body of work made completely from materials scavenged from the city dump. She holds a Masters in Fine Arts from Bard College and in Theological Studies from Emory University. Ever since Sherri Lynn Wood unwittingly defied the sexist dress code at Wiley Junior High School with a modest sundress of her own creation, she experienced sewing as a source of creative expression, subversive resistance, and personal empowerment. She has been improvising quilts as a creative life practice for 30 years. Her best-selling publication The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting & Living Courageously (Abrams, 2015) provides scores, or frameworks, for flexible patterns and creative exploration.
