Genetta McLean
Gloucester Docks and Guinea Boats: Dixie Selden Paints the American Coast

During the war years, Dixie Selden was forced to suspend her annual European painting excursions and seek new vistas closer to home. In 1917 she chose to follow the crowd to Gloucester, Massachusetts, which hosted a very popular art colony frequented for many years by Cincinnati artists. Although Cincinnati newspapers light-heartedly described the Gloucester Art Colony as summer art camp, it was here that Selden's impressionist style achieved its full maturity. This lecture looks at some of Dixie Selden's finest impressionist works painted at Gloucester's picturesque fishing harbor.

Genetta McLean is an art historian and artist who lives and works in midcoast Maine. She is a specialist in Italian Renaissance art history and has also written extensively on American painting. Her writings include a monograph on the Cincinnati Impressionist painter Dixie Selden and a book on American coastal paintings which is currently in production. Her interest in art history has been a major influence on her work as an artist. She exhibits with the Eisele Gallery of Fine Art in Cincinnati, Ohio and Gleason Fine Art in Portland and Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

A special collection of Genetta's recent works will be available for sale in the gallery during this event.
